Problem
Finally, happiness can be seen as simply a mental perspective; however, that does not mean that it is easy to attain. Eddie Jaku considers himself to be a happy man and maintains his happiness by appreciating everything that he has. Jaku has faced a lot of loss in his life, but instead of constantly mourning what he does not have, he appreciates every small thing that he does have. In his TED talk, Jaku shows this sentiment when he says "I'm happy because it is another day to enjoy. When I remember that I should have died a miserable death, but instead I'm alive" (Jaku, 2019). Additionally, Jaku believes that happiness does not simply happen to a person, but that instead, a person must consciously claim it for themselves. He argues that "Happiness does not fall from the sky; it's in your hands" (Jaku, 2019). Jaku finds happiness simply in living, but this is difficult for most people to do. In contrast, Vedantam describes what he calls a "hedonic treadmill," which describes the idea that people continually try to become happier, but it doesn't last (Vedantam, 2020). Things that previously brought a person happiness, do so to a lesser extent as time passes because the more of something that a person has, the less they tend to appreciate it.
