Psychopathology and the Unconscious: Should We Explore the Unconscious Today?

Since Freud's death, and due to the the success and popularization of Cognitive-Behavioral therapy, there has been a significant anti-Freudian movement among American clinicians that is not entirely over. Freud's ideas about women, gender, his unfamiliarity with cultural variations of psychosexual development, and his insistence in the interpretation of unconscious materials made many clinicians reject all his perspectives out of hand, including the very existence of the unconscious. However, a decade ago, major advances in behavioral neuroscience have revealed that many mental processes occur at the unconscious level and affect how humans behave, think, and feel about themselves and about the world. Concretely, this means that there is clear evidence today that, despite the eccentricity of some of the earlier Freudian concepts and their major gender and cultural biases, most of what Freud said about unconscious processes was accurate. Share your perspectives about exploring the unconscious though psychotherapy. Read the article proposed this week entitled, "The Neural Basis of the Dynamic Unconscious" and cite it.
