The Concept
Richard Rodriguez writes of a painful duality, a "disabling confusion," caused by speaking one language at school and another at home (27). However, he posits that "bilingualists simplistically scorn the value and necessity of assimilation" (Rodriguez 25). A crucial facet of his argument is that Rodriguez credits being forced to speak only English at school, and eventually being forced to speak it at home, with becoming successful in his career and with becoming "an American citizen." What do you think of this idea?
The Task
After considering Rodriguez' controversial ideas, find a quote that illustrates some aspect of his argument. Post the quote and an analysis of its meaning: what is Rodriguez saying here? Then explain whether you agree or disagree-or some combination thereof-and why. Though your post should be primarily focused on analyzing Rodriguez' ideas, feel free to also allude to a personal experience if you find it relevant.
The Purpose
The point of this discussion, as you prepare for Essay #3, is to help you think more deeply about the ideas of language, identity, and education.
Post Two Replies
After you type your initial post, read through the other entries and reply directly to at least two classmates and/or your professor. When you reply, please respond to a specific idea from the post, as well as any other constructive comments you wish to make. Your replies should each be at least 25 words long.
Reminder
Since your discussion posts for this course constitute a portion of the academic writing you will complete this term, make sure to use proper grammar, formal language, including capitalization ("I" instead of "i"), and correct punctuation in this college level course in all correspondence. Please avoid "text" or "twitter speak" when corresponding.
