Discussion Post: Young Goodman Brown

I'm working on a literature question and need the explanation and answer to help me learn.

• In the lecture for Hawthorne, we spoke about the idea of ancestral guilt, or the idea of feeling guilt or shame for the actions of our ancestors. Do we hold any responsibility for the actions of our ancestors? Why is this a complicated subject matter? Briefly consider how Hawthorne explore this idea in his fiction. (so, perhaps consider what the veil represents in "The Minister's Veil" or how "Young Goodman Brown" portrays humanity). 4-5 sentences as a minimum.

Edgar Allan Poe develops a specific idea for what creates a good story that we went over in our lecture for Poe. Pick any contemporary text/story (a book, movie, tv show, manga, anime, animated series, podcast, poem, webcomic or graphic novel, feel free to be creative here!) and analyze that text through the lens of Poe's aesthetic, on slides 9 and 10 of our lecture transcript. So, is it short, accessible, following the unity of effect idea, does it have ebbs and flows of action (or a rhythm), and does it elevate your soul? Do you have any observations about whether your choice passes or not? What do you think makes a good story? (5-6 sentences as a minimum)

Just as an example of question, someone argued over whether Avengers Endgame can be considered a good movie or not. They ended their discussion with an uneasy truce of "agree to disagree!"
