Case Study: Your family is devout Baptist and most of the men in your family have served in the military. You are used to structure and strict rules. Without the ROTC program, and now living on your own (not with your parents) you've lost all sense of structure. You're going out late and drinking and having sex with men you do not know several times per week. You have not come out to family, and you believe you would be disowned if you did. Being gay is a sin, according to what you family and Church believes. Every day, you wake up feeling guilty and ashamed of who you are, what you do (e.g., sex with men), and what you cannot do (e.g., serve in the military). You started cutting your legs with razors to cope with this situation. Your cuts are getting deeper and deeper, and the bleeding is difficult to stop. You spend a lot of time in the mornings and into the afternoons cutting, so you're not going to class - you can barely hear the instructors anyway so what's the point? Cutting makes you feel better and its now part of your routine. No one knows you cut or that you're doing so poorly in school, so this leads to more guilt and shame. You have no idea what you want to do with your life now that the hearing problem has eliminated the military.
