Discussion Case: Big Fat Liability,"

Americans are becoming increasingly obese. In fact, six out of ten adults and nearly 15 percent of children are overweight. Not only do many Americans eat excessively, their intakes are high in calories: fast-food, processed products, sweets, and so forth. McDonalds, as well as other fast-food chains, have been in the limelight in recent years, being subject to various lawsuits for “making people fat.” Should individuals be responsible for their own weight, or is it incumbent upon business, government, or society to intervene?

Respond to Discussion Questions :

1- In your opinion, should the food and restaurant industries be held liable for the rise of obesity, or not?

2- What do you think is the best solution to the obesity epidemic? What roles can the food and restaurant industries, trial attorneys, government policymakers and regulators, and individual consumers play in a solution, if any?
