This assignment will assess Competency 1: Examine the legal structure and governance of higher education and how the judicial system affects an institution's policies and practices.

Directions: Write a 500-1000 word paper discussing the following: Choose one insitution from each category (public, nonprofit, and for-profit) and answer each of the following questions about it.

1) What is the board called?

2) Who comprises the board?

3) What do you think each member of the board brings to it?

4) Who is the highest-ranking administrator under the board?

5) Who is the highest-ranking academic administrator other than the above, if applicable?

6) Who is the highest-ranking financial officer?

7) Does the institution have an Office of General Counsel?

You should be able to locate this information from a search of your chosen university's website.

After you have answered the questions above, compare and contrast each of the three types of institutions' governing structures. In your analysis, consider: 1) What are the differences and what are the similarities. 2) Why do the different types have different governing structures--what are the advantages and disadvantages of each, and why are certain structures better suited to certain types of institutions? 3) What did you find most surprising or interesting in your study?

Support your points with credible cited information. Cite your sources in APA style, using both in-text citations and reference page entries.

2) Read the individual profiles in "Part II: Profiles of 30 For-Profit Education Companies" of:

1) Apollo Group, Inc.

2) Grand Canyon Education, Inc.

3) National American University

4) Education Management Corporation

Write an analysis that answers the following questions:

• Compare and contrast the reviews of the four institutions. Which insitutions fare better in the report, and why?

• What were the most scathing remarks made about for-profit education institutions as a whole and for each of the four institutions or corporations individually?

• What were the positive remarks made about for-profit education institutions as a whole and for each of the four institutions or corporations individually?
