Part 1:

During the 1970s, as result of the Attica Prison riots and other social forces such as the civil rights movement, changes began to occur within the management of prisons that led to the development of more humane prison environments. Many prison officials no longer viewed offenders as second-class citizens without rights.

In this assignment, you will be responsible for preparing an essay on the viability of treatment in prisons.

Assignment Guidelines:

• In an essay of 4-6 pages, address the following:

o Identify 3 specific goals and challenges in your argument for or against rehabilitative treatment in prison.

o Utilize 2 specific examples from case studies to support your position.

o Identify and explain the positions of 3 specific philosophical or social issues that could be used to support your analysis.

o Reference a total of 5 sources to support your analysis.

Assignment Guidelines:

• Using the course materials, textbook, library, and Web resources, research prisonization and the effects it has on prisoners depending on the length of incarceration.

• In 4-6 paragraphs, address the following:

o List and explain 4 methods that you believe can be used to positively impact prisoners and reduce the effects of prisonization.

o You must use research to support your arguments.

• Be sure to reference all sources using APA style.

• Post a new topic to the Discussion Board that contains your responses pertaining to the above information.

• Comment on at least 2 other students' posts, and propose any legitimate counterarguments that you see with regard to 2 of their 4 selected prisonization reduction methods. Encourage your classmates to defend their arguments.

Part 2:

The Supreme Court has made clear that the government is obligated to provide medical care for those offenders in its custody. Inmates have a constitutional right to medical care for serious medical needs. Discuss what is considered a serious medical need and how prison authorities make this determination. Provide examples.

Assignment Guidelines:

• Address the following in 1-2 pages:

o In your own words, what do you think constitutes as a serious medical need?

o How do prison officials determine whether an inmate has a serious medical need?

o What factors must be considered when treating inmates for medical conditions?

o Provide 2 examples of prisoner treatment. Include 1 successful treatment and 1 unsuccessful treatment with regard to prisoner safety.

• Be sure to reference all sources using APA style.

• In 3-5 paragraphs, address the following:
