Assignment:
With that in mind please answer the following 2 questions:
1 - Use Newman's conditions (marginality, psychological problems, cultural script, failure of surveillance systems, gun availability) from the link in course documents as a basis from which to apply to information in articles in Modules on Columbine, Parkland and Cho at Virginia Tech.
Simply put, your task is to see if Newman's model fits these events. Apply the model. Explore if the model fits the information from the articles.
Use at least 2 articles total from Modules on these shootings for the assignment. You do not need to use them all. 2 articles are enough to use for the assignment to connect to Newman's model.
Address all 5 parts of the model.
Use examples from articles. And organize your work so that you take 1 part of the model at a time, numbering it, and separating it from the one after, and so on. Explain your examples too. Don't just offer an example that fits the model. Say how it fits as well.
Again, looking for at least 2 assigned articles total. You do not have to use 2 articles for each part. But it would be good to see 2 articles total used for at least 2 parts of Newman's model.
2 - What do you think can be done to minimize youth violence? Improve conditions in schools?
You may wish to incorporate some of the items posted under course documents. I know there has been a lot of discussion in the air regarding solutions. If you wish to add an outside source here for part 2 only, that is fine.
