Case: About a decade ago in the skid row area of downtown Los Angeles, there was an outbreak of tuberculosis (TB). The skid row area is a heavily transient/homeless area where thousands of people live on the streets or in shelters. The strain of TB was a unique case that was only predominantly in Los Angeles. Due to the outbreak, the Center of Disease Control (CDC) dispatched scientists to the area. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health put all its resources to prevent the spread of TB in Los Angeles and elsewhere throughout the state. This is a good example of state and local officials giving priority to stopping the spread of TB. If they did not focus on this disease and localized it to this area, it could have easily been a statewide or national problem. Eventually, the numbers went down and there was no other news to report about the spreading. Have a good week!
