Case Study: Early in the chapter, the roles of men as victims of family violence (in childhood, as witnesses, and as abused spouses) were acknowledged.
As well, care was taken to recognize that not all men are violent.
Many men have vital and supportive roles within their marriages and families.
Nevertheless, remnants of patriarchal beliefs, power, control, gender inequities and other oppressive elements underlie our society and socialization processes. These types of beliefs promote and perpetuate the disrespect, mistreatment and abuse of women. There are a number of men's groups and organizations engaged in ending violence against women. In Canada, the White Ribbon Campaign is one such group.
In 2010, Tony Porter, an educator and activist to end violence against women worldwide delivered an inspiring TED Talk lecture about the messages we receive about men and women and how they affect us. His twelve minute presentation, "A Call to Men", is a down- to- earth overview of macro influences on domestic violence and a challenge to all of us to re-think how we socialize children.
