Problem

Similar to employment-based immigrant visas, family-based immigrant visas are also divided into different preference categories. The underlying principle is called "family reunification," which gives U.S. citizens and permanent residents the ability to petition certain family members for immigrant visas. Further, there are more visas available every fiscal year for family-based petitions than there are for employment-based petitions.

Question 1) What do you think about the idea of family reunification? Is it a good basis upon which immigrant visas should be based, or do you think that there is a better alternative? Should there be more preference categories eligible to receive visas for other types of familial relationships, such as married sons and daughters of permanent residents? Or perhaps some of the current preference categories should be eliminated, thereby reducing the number of family-based immigrants? What do you think?

Question 2) Should there be an equal number of visas available to both family-based and employment-petitions, or should one type have more than the other? Why?
