St Bonaventure spoke and wrote eloquently about the self-diffusing goodness of the triune God. In other words, it is the very nature of Goodness to give freely and generously of itself. In this way, and through this fecund imagery, Bonaventure ably stressed the intimate relationality at play in trinitarian thought and practice, that is, in contrast to the rising scholastic stress on getting trinitarian 'technicalities' (or the metaphysics) right. In fact, a somewhat apocryphal story is told of Bonaventure inviting Aquinas to lunch one day at his house. St Thomas, understandably, wanted to see Bonaventure's library. Bonaventure led him into his prayer-cell. "Here is the place of my deepest learning," Bonaventure said.
