Question: The text, Between the World and Me, deals with issues stemming from racism. We've already begun to read this book, and our group discussion deals with our first impressions of this book and the issues within, but we're also reading a poem this week by one Phillis Wheatley. Phillis was an African American poet during a time when Africans weren't poets, and women weren't poets either. So, Phillis is the one rare exception for her time. For this quiz, we're going to do a little research on Phillis, and we're going to develop an analytical response to her poem, On Being Brought from Africa to America. We will study Phillis' background, which will give us insights into who she was and where she came from. She has an amazing history. Once we know a little about her, we will turn our attention to her poem. We need to look closely at this poem and what it's saying. We need to consider the time period. We need to consider her gender and her race and her religion and her allegiance.
For this quiz, I want you to answer the following question. Do you feel happy or sad for Phillis? Why?
This question might sound simple, but it's not. Once you research her background and analyze this poem, you will have unique insights that will help you to answer this question analytically. I want you to make your claim, and then support your claim with compelling information. This process of research and analysis will be a lot like the process we engage in when writing our second essay for this class, so this quiz will be great practice for us.
Phillis Wheatley lived a unique life for that time period, and some might say she was lucky, but others might say they feel bad for her. What do you have to say? Your analytical response should be roughly one page in length-- 2, maybe 3 paragraphs.
