Question: In response to your peers, discuss how these inequalities are reproduced. In other words, explain why you think this inequality continues to happen in our society.
First peer below.
Individual discrimination is on a personal level, carried out by one person against another person. It is where an individual treats another unfairly due to their race, ethnicity, gender, or religion. Institutional discrimination is more systemic and widespread. It is when an institution or company, like schools and banks, practice discriminatory policies that affect entire groups of people.
An example of institutional discrimination in current events that comes to mind is how the murder of George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, was handled by our legal system. Floyd was unlawfully murdered in the street by Minneapolis police officers in May of 2020. Officers handcuffed and pinned him down using excessive force while one officer held his knee on Floyd's neck. Floyd called out that he could not breathe, but the officer did not stop. Nationwide protests began against police brutality and the injustice that was served.
It took almost a year for these officers involved to finally be brought to justice. It took months of protesting, looting, and destruction of property all over the United States before our justice system realized what needed to be done. Black Americans in the United States are being killed and badly mistreated just because of the color of their skin. This is a fitting example of systemic racism in our country today. It is unnecessary and uncalled for. It must stop.
Second peer below.
Individual discrimination is when one individual from one race/gender/religion discriminates another individual from a different race/gender/religion. Institutional discrimination is when an organization or enterprise uses discrimination due to their race/gender/religion of a group of individuals.
A recent example of institutional discrimination that came to mind is the treatment of individuals of color by officers in the country. People of color are disproportionally harassed by law enforcement when compared to their white counterparts. This mistreatment has been an on going issue that has negatively impacted marginalized communities, leading to the creation of activist groups such as the Black Lives Matter movement. One major event that invoked a lot of backlash was the way George Floyd's arrest was handled; many believed that the officers mishandled his detainment, which eventually lead to his death.
Third below is a question.
Institutional discrimination based on gender is very much alive and well and the evidence you presented was terrific! There are many reasons for the wage gap, one of which is occupational segregation wherein jobs and careers are stilled considered "masculine" or "feminine" and "women's work" is devalued. Even when males work in traditional feminine occupations, they earn more than women do. For instance, nursing is considered "women's work," yeet male nurses, on average make more money than female nurses. Same thing with college and university professors. Male professors earn more than female professors in most disciplines even with the same credentials and experience.
Why is this and what do you feel needs to be done about it?
