You are the production manager for the Quick Connect Manufacturing Company, a Manitoba owned and operated company that manufactures various cable connectors for the sound, video, and computer industries. Your shop is unionized. You are running behind schedule and you need some employees to come in and work overtime. Under the collective agreement, overtime is assigned by seniority and is earned at the rate of time and a half and paid out with an employee's normal pay check. In the past, you have had problems getting employees to work overtime. However, as luck would have it, several of your junior employees have come to you and said that they will work overtime on the weekend, but they want to have time off in lieu of overtime. Furthermore, they have stated that they will take the time off at straight time, i.e., hour for hour, but they need to know in the next 24 hours, so that they can make appropriate arrangements at home. You have a scheduled meeting with the Board of Directors in 10 minutes. What do you advise the Board of Directors on this issue?
