How do the assumptions about human nature made by Hobbes, Locke, and Rousseau differ, and how do these assumptions result in their three different ways of thinking about why we might want a state? Select one of the three and critically reflect on the answer he provides.

-Select either utilitarianism or social contract theory. Explain the theory and how it has been used to show that a state is legitimate? Critically reflect upon whether this effort is successful, and why or why not.

-What do you consider to be the most powerful criticisms of democracy? Critically think through a solution to these problems. Base both parts of your answer on the material covered in the class.
