Discussion:

A young, but promising, project manager has communicated with the laborers, who were non-native, on the job site in English. He also did not verify that they understood his directives.

The result - a disaster! But more importantly; the job moved from under budget and on time to over budget and not one time!

Do we coach or counsel? The cost to the company will be both financial and to their reputation in a very competitive market. Currently there is a recession and work has difficult to get for the company, but to be rewarded a 'job' without financial concessions (lower pricing) is nearly impossible. In other words, margins are 'thin'!

Thus, the job was already 'thin' - with margins just at break even.

Do we coach or counsel?

If we coach - how and what do we do to insure the behavior improves?

If we counsel - do we remove or give more responsibility - to determine behavioral changes?
