1. Symbolic interactionism is a sociological perspective that is influential in many areas of the sociological discipline. It is particularly important in microsociology and social psychology.
Symbolic interactionism is derived from American pragmatism and particularly from the work of George Herbert Mead. Symbolic interactionism definition, a theory that human interaction and communication is facilitated by words, gestures, and other symbols that have acquired conventionalized meanings.
Some of the words that we use regarding "dating" such as "hanging out" and hooking up" may have different meanings to people and groups, at different times in history, in different places and in different situations. These two terms are discussed in your text (Lauer and Lauer, 2012) on pages 108-109. After reviewing that section of the text, please answer the following questions.

• What do these two terms "hanging out" and hooking up" mean to you and within your social circles?
• Do you believe that these two terms are just different components or aspects of the term "dating"?

2. On page 91 in the course text under premarital sex Lauer ad Lauer mention that:
Most religious traditions link sex with marriage. However, premarital sex occurs in all societies. How much occurs in the United States, and how do Americans feel about it?
After reading this section on pages 91-93 answer these questions:
• What do the author's mean by the term double standards?
• What is the extent of premarital sex occurs in America?
• What are some of the social factors that Lauer and Lauer indicate or related to premarital sex? And, how do religious traditions correlate with premarital sex?
3. There seems to be a lot of desire in American society for romantic love, However, there are 7 types of love that have at different times in history been more important than romantic love or at least deemed more appropriate to the times.
