1. Lost in Translation is a film that tends to defy genre. It won a Golden Globe for Best Comedy, but is it a comedy? Is it a love story? If you were asked what "kind" of film this is, what would you answer and why?

2. How does the film make use of silence? How does it make use of music? What distinguishes scenes of silence from scenes with music? In what way might uses of sound become a motif, and what other motifs do you see at work in the film?

3. Both of the main characters of Bob and Charlotte seem to be experiencing varying degrees of dissatisfaction and listlessness. What is Bob dissatisfied with? What about Charlotte? In what ways are these feelings similar and different?

4. With a title like Lost in Translation and a setting where the dominant language differs from the film's audience, it is impossible to ignore the effects of untranslated dialogue. What is the effect of none of the foreign language of the film being translated? How might your interpretation differ if the film was subtitled or you were familiar with Japanese?

5. Look at the scenes that include windows and mirrors. What is the effect of them taken all together? Why are characters so often captured looking through or into glass? Are there times when it is the viewer of the film looking through glass? How might these scenes contribute to a theme of the film?

6. Again given the title and untranslated language, another potential theme is between the known and unknown. This is exemplified in the final scene. Why does the director choose not to share what Bob whispers in Charlotte's ear? Do you think it is an effective choice? Do you wan to know what is said and/or have a prediction? Is there a difference between what is satisfying or unsatisfying to not know?

7. Films communicate cultural messages. What might this film be saying about differences between culture, differences and similarities between stages of life, effects of cultural isolation, or the nature of dissatisfaction or alienation? Explain what cultural messages the film communicates -- and be sure you tell us how you came to that conclusion (using detailed examples). What do you believe is the thematic meaning of the film? How, specifically, is that theme communicated by Coppola? (Remember that you need to consider not whether or not you agree with the message of the film, but instead simply look at what Coppola's message is and how it is communicated.)
