Problem
Each of the social processes theories examined in this week's lectures makes a particular causal claim. Differential Association and Social Learning theories see individuals shaped by peers, parents and other figures around them. Social control theories, including age-graded control theory discussed in the life course section, stress that our bonds to society are the central mechanism in decreasing our likelihood in criminal behavior. Both have been criticized based on the classic "chicken-and-egg" or reverse causation problem.
For Differential Association, the problematic question becomes: What comes first: do our peers influence our delinquent/criminal behavior (as the theory claims) or do we just happened to spend time with peers we see as similarly interested in delinquency or crime? The same kinds of question are at issue for social control theories: What comes first: Does our lack of connection to pro-social institutions increase our criminal behaviors (as the theory claims) or are we cut off from these institutions as a result of our criminal behaviors?
First, after reading the text and the lecture materials how would the major theorists associated with the theory in your text respond to this thorny problem? Next, based on the readings, course materials and even your own experiences, what direction do you mainly see taking place in these theories? That is to say, do you agree with the causal claim of the theory or do you think they have it backwards? You should select one theory to focus on in your response.
