Assignment
The following assignment asks to write a summary for a specific purpose / audience (part 1) and then write a reflection on writing choices (part 2).
Writing Scenario:
Imagine you have just been hired as an assistant to Dr. Imperator Furiosa, a physics professor. You haven't met her yet; all you know about her is that she takes credibility and research very seriously. She is organizing a conference entitled "Navigating Teaching in the age of AI". You just read an article that you think will be relevant to her conference, and you want to summarize it for her in an email. The article is "We Can Help Students Think" by John Warner.
Part I: Email
A. Set this up as an actual email (to, from, subject line)
B. Write an opening and a closing paragraph appropriate for your purpose. Use an appropriate style and tone.
C. Professor Furiosa reads everything on her phone, so the summary of the article should not be too long. Place the summary in the most appropriate place in this email.
D. Include any other information you think Professor Furiosa will need.
Part II: Reflection paragraph. Set up this part as a separate section.
Writing is about making choices. In this assignment, some choices have been made for you. For example, I gave you the genre (email) and the length of the summary should be short, but you still had to make many writing choices on your own.
Select two specific writing choices you made in creating this email and explain why you made them. For example, how did you address your reader? What did you put in the opening and closing paragraphs? What style of writing did you use? What tone did you create? When referring to these decisions, provide specific examples from your email
