Question 1)First, reflect on the news footage of 9/11/01 shared in the supplementary links. I wanted you to be able to experience the events as they unfolded to give you a sense of the confusion and shock of that sunny Tuesday morning 22 years ago. What are your reactions to that footage and to watching the events "in real time"? What did you learn about 9/11 growing up in its aftermath, and in what context did you learn about it? What does 9/11 represent today, and how does it continue to shape the American mindset?
Question 2) Several of the assigned poems are directly about 9/11 experiences and reactions: Szymborska's, Clifton's, and Howe's especially. Choose at least one of these poems and its related content and reflect on it/them in some detail. What "happens" in the poem, and what tone or tactic does it employ? Is it narrative? Commemorative? Is it trying to take a position, or merely recount a memory? See if you can work your way into the poem and unlock its inner workings and meaning.
Question 3) A few of the other poems (like Dunn's and Olds') aren't about 9/11 so much as its aftermath: the ensuing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Choose one or both of these poems and reflect on them in detail. What attitude do they take toward these events, and how do they see to evoke a particular attitude in the reader? What do they share with the actual 9/11 poems, and how are they different?
