Part II

In the NY Times article, "Student Loan Pause Is Ending, With Consequences for Economy," Lydia DePillis discusses the potential ramifications of the unpausing of student loan debt in the US. As part of the debt-limit deal struck between Democrats and Republicans, the Biden administration must end the pause to student loan payments by August 30th. The forbearance of student debt has existed for over three years since the early stages of the pandemic to provide relief to families financially struggling due to COVID-19. This break was essential for people like Mr. McConnell who was laid off in 2021 and had to support his children's undergraduate education. However, after being granted relief from paying federal student debts for so long, many debtors used their extra capital for other investments, such as mortgages, loans, or credit cards. As the article describes, "Half of all borrowers whose student loan payments are scheduled to restart have other debts worth at least 10 percent more than they were before the pandemic." In other words, half of those with student loans have accumulated more debt than they had before COVID-19. The reinforcement of student loans after August will add another bill to families, which could have catastrophic effects for those struggling to pay off all their debts. Many have criticized the government's student debt pause policy as it has resulted in billions of dollars in government loss and is leading to post-debt relief hardships like those described above. From an economic standpoint, the government has to balance the desire to provide relief for struggling Americans in times of unemployment while still having the plan to ensure the government doesn't lose too much money and debtors can pay back their debt in the long term.
