Problem
I. Indentures coming to Virginia would eventually be frustrated by the lack of resources they would face given a limited amount of land and the existence of indigenous peoples. Land above all was a paramount property to people of farming societies. What would have happened in the end if indentures continued coming to Virginia with no chance of gaining land?
II. Bacon was a land owning elite. Why did lower class peoples, regardless of race follow him and take part? What did they stand to gain from revolting against Jamestown?
III. In Virginia in the 1600s, Anthony Johnson secured his freedom from indentured servitude, acquired land, and became a respected member of his community. Elizabeth Key successfully appealed to the colony's legal system to set her free after she had been wrongfully enslaved. By the 1700s, the laws and customs of Virginia had begun to distinguish black people from white people, making it impossible for most Virginians of African descent to do what Johnson and Key had done. Why in the wake of Bacon's Rebellion did racial lines become more strict and legally engrained?
