Assignment: Public health and healthcare systems are impacted by globalization through the exchange of new ideas and opportunities to influence the larger field of public health in a global context. As you consider the public health threats attributed to globalization, how do the public health agencies in your local community (State of Alabama) navigate the challenge of limited resources in order to build strong public health systems?

As you respond to your classmates, provide suggestions for another way that this challenge could be addressed.

Answer and then reply to my classmate's response to the above questions and explain why you agree? (a minimum of 250 words or more each question)

The Global Health system that we live in makes it possible that an epidemic that originates from a virus in an area of a country like China could affect remote regions like San Diego, California.

San Diego County has a population of over 3 million residents. According to data from Health and Human Services (HHS) as of June 18, 2020, they have detected 10,092 positive cases of COVID 19, and unfortunately, 331 patients have died due to complications caused by the virus.

Of course, we cannot compare with what happened in New York City, which with 211,260 and 17,389 deaths, leads the statistics of the damage caused by the virus in the US.

Sharing a border with the city of Tijuana, which is the city with the third most cases in Mexico, makes HHS's work seem more important.

The border between the USA and Mexico was never wholly closed since only people who only had a visa to cross were prevented from crossing. Still, citizens and residents have no problem crossing the border.

What did San Diego do well to have very few deaths from the virus?

1. California Governor Gavin Newson issued to stay-at-home order to protect the health and well-being of all Californians and slow the spread of COVID 19 (3/19/2020)

2. The healthcare system always could care for sick people. While other union states decided who would die or live because they lacked respirators to care for them, Governor Newson reported California had more than 10,000 respirators to serve patients.

3. The doctors stopped taking care of patients with other diseases like Diabetes or High Blood Pressure in the hospitals to avoid that COVID positive patients could infect those who had not had contact with the virus.

4. COVID 19 tests were carried out on all the residents of the county who needed it. The difference from Tijuana where the test costs, on average $ 200.00, and few patients could afford it.

5. Although martial law was not imposed like in Argentina- where you could go to jail for going out on the street- the inhabitants of San Diego, behaved very well. Even in times of high heat, people did not go to the beaches because the government asked us to keep a healthy distance.

6. Despite the economic losses, restaurants and other non-essential businesses remained closed. Citizens were helped by the financial aid received from the federal government and the EDD (unemployment) payments.

7. At no time was there a crisis in our public health system.

It was like we were doing what had been planned for situations like these, and each person from HHS and the health system did what was indicated. That is why the number of deceased patients in San Diego is well below the national average.
