Problem: Annie is a 30-year-old woman. She presents to the emergency room at least once a month with a medical emergency. Typically, Annie states that she feels she is having a heart attack or stroke, only to find that doctors can find nothing wrong with her. At her most recent visit, when doctors tried to discharge her from the hospital, she started having a seizure. After doing a full EEG study, Annie convulsed eight times during the stay, but her EEG work showed that she was not showing seizure activity and nurses who were taking care of her believe she might have been faking activity because a staff member observed that when a nurse left the room, she stopped convulsing, but when the nurse came back, she started again.
