Question: Bob has paranoid schizophrenia and believes that the FBI is trying to kidnap him to do experiments on him. One day, he is sitting on the sidewalk and a mental health worker approaches Bob to see if he needs anything, as Bob is homeless. Because Bob has hallucinations as a symptom of his disorder, he doesn't always see the world as it is actually happening. In this case, though it is a mental health worker that is approaching him, Bob "sees" an FBI agent with handcuffs and other restraints. As such, Bob cries out puts his hands up to "protect" himself because he fears for his safety. Unfortunately, he accidentally assaults the worker when he does this, breaking the workers nose and cutting his cheek. Bob's clinical psychologist testifes that Bob experiences visual hallucinations (seeing things that are not there). In this case, Bob believed that he was being attacked, and had not formulated the intent to commit an assault against a mental health worker. In other words, Bob does not have a guilty mind.
