Instructions

This is an individual assignment. For this assignment, you will pick a research article from a major academic journal and analyze the article in a 5-6 page paper. The purpose of this assignment is to provide students with practice in evaluating a research article in a peer-reviewed journal. You have freedom to select any research article that meets the criteria discussed below. Students who are unsure as to whether an article is appropriate should consult with the instructor or teaching assistant. Keep in mind they will need sufficient time to consider any questions that you have.

Article Criteria

The article that you choose must:
• be in some area of information studies (i.e. library and information science, IT management);
• present the results of original scientific research (e.g., an experiment, a survey), the research can be qualitative and/or quantitative, basic or applied;
• not be completely theoretical, editorial, or a literature review;
• be published in a peer-reviewed (refereed) journal; and
• be available in full-text form through one of the databases provided by the FSU Library System.

Article Review

The following information should be included on the cover sheet of the article review in addition to their names and course section:

• The complete citation in APA format. See the General Instructions for information about APA format

• The name of the database (e.g, Library Literature & Information Science Full Text, Social Sciences Full Text) from which you retrieved the article.

The article review should be 5-8 pages in length, 12-point font, double-spaced, and include page numbers. You should use your best academic writing.

Your review should discuss the following:

1. What is the research problem?

2. What is the research question?

3. What is the purpose of this research (descriptive, exploratory, explanatory, evaluative)? If the author(s) doesn't state the purpose of the research, can you tell what it is?

4. Is this research problem significant? Why or why not?

5. What is your assessment of the literature review? Does it provide sufficient context for you to understand the study? Is there anything missing (important articles, explanations, etc.) that you would like to see included?

6. Is this research study informed by theory? If so, what theory and how is the theory used?

7. Describe the research design used to address the research question
a. qualitative/quantitative,
b. experimental/quasi experimental/non-experimental,
c. experiment, survey, case study, content analysis, etc.

8. Who or what is being studied? Is this a sample or a population? How were subjects chosen for observation?

9. What data collection method is used? Does this type of data collection method make sense? Do you have any concerns about the validity or reliability of the data collection method?

10. Is enough information provided for another researcher to replicate this study if he/she wished to?

11. How was the data analyzed? Do you have any concerns about the process used or the way the findings are reported?

12. To what extent are the findings from this study generalizable? If so, how?

13. Are the conclusions of this study persuasive?

14. Do you have any ethical concerns about this research?

15. What are the implications of this study for professional practice?

16. What are the implications of this study for research in the field of information studies?

17. If you were reviewing this manuscript for publication would you recommend that it be published as is, revised and resubmitted (if so, say what needs to be revised), or rejected (if rejected why and a suggestion of an alternative publication the author might consider).
