You have been asked to design a simultaneous traffic signal system for six intersections on a suburban arterial. The distances between consecutive intersections are:
Intersection A to Intersection B—3800 ft
Intersection B to Intersection C—4000 ft
Intersection C to Intersection D—3900 ft
Intersection D to Intersection E—3850 ft
Intersection E to Intersection F—3950 ft
Suitable cycle lengths for the intersections are
Intersection A—60 sec
Intersection B—55 sec
Intersection C—65 sec
Intersection D—60 sec
Intersection E—55 sec
Intersection F—60 sec
If an appropriate progression speed for the arterial is 45 mi/h, what cycle length would you use? Give a reason for your choice.
The structure consists of two uniform members AB and BC, each weight 2kN. The member are pinned to each other at B, and the structure is supported by a pin at C and a surface at A having coefficient of static friction 1.2.
A three point bending test is performed on a glss specimen having a rectangular cross section of hight d =6 mm and width b = 12 mm the distance between support points is 45mm.
A nozzle is designed to linearly accelerate the fluid from V1 to V2 (i.e., V = ax +b, where a and b are constants). Determine the local acceleration, the convective acceleration, and the total acceleration at point 1 and 2 at t = 0.
The coefficients of static and kinetic friction are 0.3 and 0.2, respectively, between each of the plates and between plate A and the ground. Determine the acceleration of each plate.

An open system Brayton cycle is used in a power plant. The atmospheric inlet conditions of the compressor are: temperature 30C and pressure 100kPa and the pressure at its outlet is 1200kPa.
A piston-cylinder device contains 0.85 kg R-134a at 263K. The piston is free to move and has a mass of 12 kg and diameter of 25 cm. The atmospheric pressure is 98 kPa. Heat is added to the cylinder until the R-134 temperature = 10 o C.
