Question: Working with families culturally or linguistically different from the teacher is often a reality in this country. Imagine you are a principal, and your job is to evaluate the cultural competence of your teaching staff. What criteria would you use to assess your teachers? In all fairness to your older faculty, many teachers who have been in education for a long time did not formally study family collaboration practices in college. As such, they sometimes feel uncomfortable communicating with families. What would you suggest colleges add to teacher preparation programs to increase the competence of new teachers?
