You learned the steps of the human resources cycle: recruit, employ, reward, manage, develop, and transition or exit. Rewards, an important part of the cycle, can be intrinsic or extrinsic. A business can take steps to create an environment in which employees are intrinsically motivated, such as providing a sense of purpose, trust, belonging, and achievement.

Think about a time you have felt intrinsically rewarded by an experience with a leader or on a team (at work or elsewhere). Answer the following in your problem:

1. Describe the situation.

2. Did this intrinsic motivation result from one of the environmental characteristics named above (purpose, trust, belonging, and achievement) or something else?

3. What created the conditions for you to feel rewarded?

4. In what ways could the organization or leader have improved the environment for intrinsic motivation?
