Unfolding Case Study, Chapter 11, Initiating the Leadership and Management Role Part 1 Jack is a 57-year-old computer programmer. He went to the clinic for his annual exam, and it was determined that it was time for his pneumonia vaccination. His provider, Karen (a nurse practitioner), was accompanied that day, by a medical student named Alice. Karen indicated that this was a routine injection and that if Jack had no objections, Alice would be giving the injection. Jack did not object and rolled up his sleeve. Karen began charting the visit on the computer in the exam room. Jack commented that there was some discomfort during the injection but was assured by Karen that this was normal and Jack left the clinic. Two weeks later, the pain in Jack's shoulder had increased to the point that it restricted his movement making it difficult to work and disturbing his sleep.
