Assignment:

Marella's Xmas Surprise

"Mr. Shen?" The secretary tried to speak calmly into the receiver. "This is Anthony. Could you come down to the seventeenth floor? It's sort of an emergency."

Anthony hung up. It was an emergency alright. Marella Morgan, the chief financial officer, was in her office, hanging by a rope from an extremely strong light fixture. A chair lay nearby on its side. Jason was used to seeing her in the office before anyone else , but not like this. Jason had waited for Anthony to arrive. He'd know what to do.

Anthony's reaction had been cool. "What a horrible thing-and on the last workday before Christmas. Call the police. I'll get Mr. Shen down here. From the moment Thomas Shen stepped out of the elevator, he was enmeshed in damage control. As president of Yong Enterprises, he had to break the news to the rest of the company and then deal with the press, police and Marella's family.

Thomas didn't even think about going to the private conference room until Anthony reminded him at 5 p.m. "The Christmas party upstairs, Mr. Shen. People won't stay long, but I think everyone could use a little comfort." Several employees were already gathered as Thomas unlocked the door of his private conference room. A Christmas tree stood in the corner with a colorful jumble of presents under its branches. Anthony crossed to the bar and immediately began serving. Despite the alcohol, the mood remained somber. Thomas handed out a personally chosen gift to each worker, from the secretaries to the executive vice president.

Jason was one of the last to leave. He took one final look at the empty floor under the tree, then turned to join his fiancée.

"What could have driven Marella to suicide?" his fiancée wondered. "Anthony says she'd been very worried about company finances. You don't suppose that maybe she was embezzling ..."

"Marella didn't kill herself," Jason responded. He was murdered and I knowm who did it."

Whodunit? And how did Jason know?
