Case Study: Michelle

Michelle is a 19-year-old freshman at a state college. She is seeking counseling at the recommendation of the dean of students, as she has recently been placed on academic probation. Michelle is failing two of her four courses this semester due to a lack of attendance and work production. Michelle says she doesn't know what is wrong with her; she just can't bring herself to go to class. She thinks about going, then she gets "stressed" and does something else, like watch Netflix in her room. Before she knows it, class is over, and she's not gone. Her friends and roommates encourage her to go, but it doesn't help. This happened once before, in high school, but everyone thought it was senioritis. Once she realized she didn't need the class to graduate, she just dropped it.

  1. What do you think are the automatic thoughts that Michelle is having as she contemplates going to class?
  2. What do you think might be the intermediate beliefs at play here, the belief systems that lie just underneath these automatic thoughts for Michelle?
  3. Based on what you know so far, take a guess at what core beliefs might be influencing Michelle's thoughts or feelings. What must someone believe about him- or herself in order to conclude that it is safer not to go than to go and fail.
  4. Based on what you know so far, take a guess at what core beliefs might be influencing Michelle's thoughts or feelings. What must someone believe about him- or herself in order to conclude that it is safer not to go than to go and fail.
  5. What other questions would you have for the client? What other goals would you identify? How would you prioritize them?
