Question: The political question over slavery is one of the dominant debates in American politics in the nineteenth century and the central cause of the beginnings of the American Civil War. But it also fundamentally centered on two different world views connected to race, legality, and a justification for war. Read over these materials; Address of John Brown (1859) and Alexander Stephens "Cornerstone Speech" (1861) and answer one of these two questions:

How were African Americans treated by the American legal system during the buildup to the Civil War? Consider the legal cases we looked at this week, the podcast interview with Dr. Finkelman, as well as their connections to the debates surrounding the start of the Civil War.

What contradictions do you see in the arguments for slavery in the final years before the start of the Civil War? Consider not only the legal response to the institution of slavery, but how individuals also viewed slavery as a fundamental right or a fundamental wrong.
