Homework: Self Esteem Scale Measuring and Improving- The CSWE EPAS Competencies- The Domains: Knowledge, Skills
The purpose of this homework is to promote an in depth understanding of measurement. As a social worker, you will be expected to engage in evidence-based practice. As a component of evidence-based practice, you will need to be competent in identifying an outcome of interest in your practice and then appropriately defining and measuring this outcome as a way to evaluate practice. Oftentimes, quantitative measurement instruments are used to track, assess, and analyze data related to outcomes.
1. Identify a measure (perhaps one we talked about in class).
2. What construct does the measure purport to measure?
3. How is the construct conceptualized? (think thoughts, feelings, behaviors...)
4. How are the concepts operationalized? (Which questions align with thoughts, feeling, or behaviors?)
5. Draw (use powerpoint or actually draw) the relationships between the construct, conceptualization, and operationalization (similar to what we did in class).
6. In a short write up:
a. Discuss how many questions the measure has.
b. How it is scored (e.g., the process by which a total score is calculated)
c. Find two articles that have used the measure. Was the measure used as an independent variable or a dependent variable in each article?
i. If a dependent variable: what other measures were used as IVs?
ii. If an independent variable: what other measures were used as DVs?
iii. In your view, is this the right measure for this study or could something else have been used?
7. Compose a reference sheet for the measure (you may also cite a study that developed the measure) and the two papers used in 6.c.
8. A few sentences about what you learned (think of this part as a reflection)
9. Include a copy of the measure if you picked a measure we didn't talk about in class.
