Comparison: Paul Cezanne, The Large Bathers, 1906 / Paul Gauguin, Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?, 1897-98

Length: Two pages, double-spaced, 11 pt. font

"Painted from 1900-1906 and 1897-1898, respectively, these works form a bridge from the 19th to 20th century and influenced a generation of modern artists that included Picasso and Matisse. Both pictures address a classical tradition of representing the idealized nude in an idyllic landscape, yet both also break with convention, conjuring radically new visions of earthly paradise."

What constitutes the idealized nude and idyllic landscape for each artist?  Both "break with convention," but what were those conventions that they break from, and how does each artist depart from those?  Are they doing so in entirely different ways, or are there similarities and differences in their approaches?  Discuss, with detailed references to the works, what these are.

Papers should be two pages in length, double-spaced, in 11 pt. font and with 1-inch margins.  This is not a lot of room to discuss all the details of these works, so you need to write very carefully.  You can say a lot in a short space, but you need to make every word count.
