With advancements in communications technology and collaborations tools (Teams, Zoom, Skype, FlowDock, GoToMeeting, Slack, WebEx, Asana, Dapulse, Proofhub, Redbooth, Tello, Wimi, Milanote, Codingteam, Igloo, Google Docs, & Quip), virtual project teams (VPTs) are now a reality, the current pandemic notwithstanding. In your opinion:
- Under what conditions can VPTs be successful? (For example, what kinds of projects lend itself to being done by VPTs)
- Under what conditions can VPTs be an overextension of what's possible? (What might cause a VPT to be unsuccessful)
Provide a real-world example of each (or a hypothetical one based on your conclusions above) and elaborate.
Even before the current pandemic, VPTs have been used more and more. Not only has technology made this possible (desirable even) but the diversity and availability of talent, especially if located overseas, have also made it a necessity. Considerations of cost (it is cheaper to meet virtually than have someone travel overseas, for example) and time (multiple people from multiple locations can meet and collaborate more often and on short-notice) are major factors that favor VPTs. You may also consider if it would be beneficial for the VPT members to meet face-to-face at least once before going fully virtual. It is this week's challenge to describe the conditions under which VPTs will work...or not.
