Question: A experiment conducted in 2000 explored how individuals assessed the potential risks and potential benefits of a variety of technologies, such as nuclear power or the use of artificial preservatives in foods. Subjects were given material to read that stressed either the risks or the benefits, but not both. What conclusions did the researchers reach? People could not distinguish at all between credible and untrustworthy sources of information People fall into one of two "types" --either being much more sensitive to new information about risks, or much more impressed by new information about benefits People were more skeptical of the information presented to them in written form than when the same information was presented to them verbally People treat risks and benefits as "connected" --when they learn more about the benefits of a technology, they conclude that the risks must be lower than they previously believed
