Case: Of the more than 325.7 million persons living in the United States, approximately 45.8 million are African Americans (U.S. Census Bureau, 2018). According to U.S. Census Bureau projections, the African American population is expected to increase to 59.7 million (14.3 percent of the total) in 2060. The struggle of African Americans to improve their quality of life after the end of slavery has been hampered for generations by persistent racism, discrimination, poverty, crime, unemployment, and underemployment. Studies also show that a large number of African American students are assigned to classes for students with disabilities.

Think about the characteristics of teachers you have worked with, or been taught by, who are successful teachers of students with disabilities.

What conclusions can you draw about them? How successful have they been in working with students who had disabilities?

Do agree more minorities, especially; African American students are assigned to special education classes? Why or why not?
