Suffrage and franchise mean right to vote. If someone is disenfranchised, it means they don't have the right to vote. Ann Other talks about the woman's sphere.
Ann Other talks about the woman's sphere. In the 1830-1840s they came up with the idea of separate spheres for men and women. The woman's sphere was the house and the man's was away from the house such as work.
WCTU stands for Women's Christian Temperance Union. Temperance is another term for prohibition or banning/limiting alcohol. Many women blamed men's abuse of alcohol for domestic violence, poverty, and homelessness.
Governor James Ferguson also known as Pa Ferguson is the only Texas governor to be impeached and removed from office. He initially won election by appealing to the farmers and the poor. He passed unprecedented rent control legislation for tenant farmers. However, he attacked the University of Texas and cut funding to not only UT but K-12 education. He asked the UT Board of Regents to fire certain professors that he did not agree with and when the board refused, he vetoed almost all funding to UT. He was impeached for embezzling state money. It just so happened that Governor Ferguson had $156,500 dollars in his bank in Waco which was the exact amount of money missing from the state treasury. He wouldn't reveal where the bank deposit came from and was eventually found guilty and removed from office. Women also did not like that he was against women's suffrage. Ironically, his wife Miriam or Ma Ferguson was elected the first female governor of Texas in 1925 and Pa set up a desk across from hers in the governor's office. Felons are not allowed to hold political office in Texas
