Assignment: Applicability of GREAT Program to Juveniles Presentation
This project will consist of an in-depth analysis of a juvenile justice program and Victor Rios' Punished. The project will consist of a short paper and a PowerPoint presentation with detailed speaker notes.
Part I: Program Overview
In this portion of the project you should submit a two-page description that includes the following:
A. Introduction
B. Investigate what community policing programs or programs in general are available to combat juvenile gangs in your jurisdiction. Interview an administrator or staff member involved in the the program. You should ask them the following questions:
a. Define the program.
b. Why it is needed?
c. What components of the program make it necessary?
d. In your opinion, what components of the program make it successful?
C. Describe the juvenile justice agency that houses the program.
a. Give a detailed description of the agency.
b. Where is it located? Describe the jurisdiction.
D. Conclusion
Part II: PowerPoint Presentation
A. Explain whether you believe the program that you chose for your jurisdiction would also apply to the juveniles in Victor Rios's Punished, keeping in mind the jurisdiction (location) in Punished versus your jurisdiction. Explain why or why not.
B. Read through the report in the course textbook on p. 205 in Appendix B "5 Ways Law Enforcement Agencies Can Use Data on Juveniles." Out of these five strategies, choose the one that you think would be most effective for addressing the needs of the juveniles in Rios' book. Explain why you have chosen the strategy you did and how it applies to the juveniles in Punished
a. Does the same strategy apply to the program that you chose for your own jurisdiction? If not, which strategy would work the best? Explain.
C. What does Rios mean by the Youth Support Complex? Do you agree with his approach? Why or Why not? Does his approach work in the context of your jurisdiction?
D. After reading Punished, identify two recommendations to improve the program that you chose from your jurisdiction. This slide should clearly explain what the two recommendations are and why they are needed. You should cite information from Punished and from the textbook (Juvenile Justice) to explain your recommendations.
