Reflection Assignment Instructions

This document outlines the requirements for the Reflection Assignment. This is a cornerstone assignment for this course. This document is posted separately because it is important and unique to this course.

The Reflection assignment is a pillar of this course and as such is very important. It is not a casual assignment. Please place great value on this assignment. Reflecting on your learning and writing a weekly reflection summary has three important benefits:

• It is an opportunity for you to think about what you have learned and how you will apply it.

• Since there is no face to face interaction, your comments assist your instructor in evaluating how you are doing.

• Finally, it helps you prepare for the next week.

The Reflection Assignment-

Each week you will post a Reflection to the Reflection Discussion summarizing what you learned from the readings, research, and conferencing activities. Your Reflection summary will include your course goals. The final summary due in Week 6 will be an expanded reflection summary that includes overall course comments. Please use the Reflection Template provided at the end of this document for each reflection assignment.

Use references as needed.

Formal Assignment

The Reflection Summary is a formal assignment and as such grammar and spelling is important. You should first prepare this assignment as a Word document, then copy and paste the contents into the appropriate discussion thread. This gives you an opportunity to run spell check and to edit your summary if necessary.

Before you begin writing, sit down, relax, clear your thoughts, and think. It is a wonderful opportunity to assess your learning. You do not have to repeat each and every thing you did and read during the week. For example, you do not have to rewrite the Discussion Questions, although you will want to highlight something you learned from one. Nor do you have to restate the contents of each reading assignment.

You must use the format listed below for your Reflection assignment. It will help organize your thoughts. It is important to be thoughtful; if you only write a quick one or two lines - "I did this and this and it was interesting," or merely restate the question you will only receive partial credit.

Feedback

Your Reflection serves as a ‘feedback document' for the instructor. Therefore, the better your analysis of the week, the more effective feedback the instructor can provide you.

You will probably spend an hour in preparing to write a quality Reflection. Thinking about the week and what the material means to you and how you will apply it is an important part of this process. After you have written your first draft, reread it for content and check for spelling, grammar and formatting errors. Make any needed corrections to your assignment and then post it in the appropriate Reflection Discussion.

The Reflection is an important part of this course and gives you an opportunity to reflect on what you have learned and what your class goals are.

INTRODUCTION

Reflection and goal setting are key ingredients in the learning process. The weekly Reflection can be helpful to you in reaching your learning goals if you view it as more then just an assignment. This is a formal assignment; use your best writing and critical thinking skills.

You will include a section in which you discuss your personal and professional goals as they relate to this course and your studies in general. This will increase the Opening / Introductory section for Week 1 by 50 words.

You will expand your responses by 50 words per section. Do not repeat the question within your answer.

As a convenience you may copy this form into your word processor and then insert your responses below each question.

You will begin your reflection with opening comments (approximately 25 - 50 words). Then, you will answer the questions presented in the following four sections. As a guide to answering the questions, for maximum credit, the response to the first three sections should be 50 to 100 words per section and section four should be 100 to 150 words.
