Four different tissue densities can be seen on x-rays. These densities are air, soft tissue, fat, and bone. Each one shows different colors depending on the level of x-ray absorption. Bones have the highest level of absorption which appears white on an x-ray. Air absorbs very little and shows up very dark (black).

Another tool that is used clinically by RTs is a capnography.

Capnography can be used to assess proper tube placement and monitor end tidal CO2 changes. End tidal CO2 monitors show a CO2 value in a square wave form. The tracing starts at inspiration which should read 0. The wave form can provide insight as to what is going on in a patients lungs.

If there is no plateau on the waveform before the next inspiration this indicates some sort of obstruction.
