Case Scenario:

I have a five-year-old client who is mostly nonverbal. The client's speech/language pathologist is using floor time and her own adapted version of PODD (Pragmatic Organization Dynamic Display) to teach functional communication in the school. I am the client's home-based BCBA, and my team is teaching him PECS (picture exchange communication system). His vocalizations are emerging but highly restricted. It is difficult to read through all the research available on PODD as an effective evidence based functional communication system even when it's used with procedural integrity. I have always understood from my BCaBA colleagues that floor time is not research based. I am conflicted in terms of guiding my parents because of the SLP at school. She has basically defined PECS as a simple manding procedure and applied behavior analysts as only discrete trial training (DTT).
