Your first task is to find a TV show or a podcast that interests you that discusses different realms or regions across the globe. Aim not to pick something too "on the nose". By this, I mean you should avoid TV shows or podcasts that talk about your realm very directly, such as a review of the southwest region, or a video of the geography of this place or that. This assignment again looks at our three main questions about a region, but furthers it to understand how media and perception influence our understanding of the globe.
1. What characteristics differentiate a given region from other regions?
2. What circumstances and key events are responsible for the character of a given region?
3. So what, why should we care? How does it impact the global community?
When choosing the media you want to review, avoid choosing fictional works or direct documentaries. It is typically much easier to choose a show that interacts with a realm as a periphery piece (i.e. focus of the show is on music, food, religion etc. but it's situated in different realms/spaces). Please reach out to your instructor if you have any questions or concerns.
You will review this medium, highlighting not just what the medium is telling you, but how they address issues. How do they engage with the subject? What, if any, ramifications of this medium were there? As Marshall McLuhan said, "the medium is the message".
