Assignment:
This assignment should be formatted like a letter (Dear X, Sincerely, and so on).
The letter should discus aspects of colonial America (here are some ideas): Be sure to discuss your role in the scenario (such as a legislator, civilian, merchant, soldier, immigrant, indigenous person) and be as specific as possible.
- How the event specifically affects you (directly and/or indirectly).
- Your character's personal views on the colonies.
- What your character hears from other people about the colonies.
- What your character read in a newspaper editorial about the event.
- What your character thinks about the long-term future of the colonies.
- Differences between the Americas and Europe (note: this would only apply to European immigrants).
- Social and political views of the era.
Remember, you are seeing these things as they happen - and your family has not heard from you in a while - so you'll need to use accurate details.
Make sure that the things your character sees and experiences would be possible at the time (for example, an English soldier in the 1740s would not be using a cell phone).
Make sure your character's views are appropriate for the time period (for example, it would be unlikely that an 18th-century woman would hold similar views as a 21st-century feminist since the modern feminist movement did not begin to emerge until the 19th century).
Keep in mind some events will lend themselves more easily to this assignment. If the event you first choose seems difficult to connect with a fictional character and a story, choose another one.
