The reading "Cairo University Students Respond to the 1979 Iranian Revolution" (attached to the "Modern Islam" lecture outline) is a pamphlet that students from the Cairo University distributed after the fall of the Shah and the success of the Iranian Revolution. The reading celebrates the creation of an Islamic state in Iran. Examine how the students distinguish between a secular and an Islamic government. How are they describing an Islamic system of government and what do they say happens if Muslims establish a secular form of government? Pay particular attention to the language they use to champion an Islamic state and vilify a secular state.

Watch the documentary "Ladies First: Saudi Arabia's First Female Candidates" (New York Times, 2016), which interviews Saudi Arabia's first female candidates after women were granted the right to vote in elections. Consider what challenges these women confront in running for office. Describe why some of them have chosen to stand for elections and what support they receive from family and friends.
