The Green New Deal

What is the Green New Deal (GND) according to the Brecher articles? What problems is it designed to respond to? How would workers and unions stand to benefit from the GND? How does it address issues of Environmental Justice?

How would the authors of this week's readings respond to critics of the GND who say that it would be too expensive? What is your view on this? Would it be worth the expense? What are the costs of inaction? What are the GND's main strengths and weaknesses as a program?

Looking at the list of Inflation Reduction Act projects and policies, which ones do you expect could make a significant positive or negative difference in your community, in terms of health, employment, sustainability, justice, etc? Are there any problems you anticipate being created by this Act? Are there ways the Act falls short of the promise of the original Green New Deal concept?

Are Green Jobs decent jobs?

How do Renner and his co-authors define "Green Jobs" and "Decent Jobs"? Of the jobs you and people you know have had, were any "Green and Decent"? Were any not "Green and Decent"? Which quadrant were/are they in in terms of the diagram on page 8? What changes in the jobs would it take to make them "Green and Decent"? Do you think the employer would agree to such changes? Why or why not? What could groups like unions, government agencies, customers, or competitors do to convince the employer to go "Green and Decent"?
